Star Wars: The Force Awakens opens in a little over two weeks, and if you thought the hype was out of control now, you ain’t seen nothing yet. There’ll be press screenings happening soon, so opinions will get out there and be fought over. The promotional machine will kick into high gear, as if it’s not already pushing the pedal to the metal. The buzz will likely be deafening. It’s without a doubt the pop culture event of the year. You might love Star Wars. You might hate Star Wars. But for the next two weeks, you’re not going to be able to avoid Star Wars.
Especially if you come here. Beginning December 6th and continuing on through December 17th, the day I finally see the new film, I’ll be doing a daily post on the franchise. Sometimes it’ll be about some aspect of the actual films, other times it’ll be a cultural or personal spin, or a delve into the sprawling Expanded Universe, both old and new. One post each day for the twelve days counting down to the 17th. And like the song that inspired the title of the series, there’s hopefully some big shiny presents waiting for me at the end of it.
So if you roll your eyes at the mere mention of lightsabers or you’ve had enough of blockbusters, this may not be the place for you for a while. For the rest of us, there’s too much excitement building to let it go unremarked. We might end up disappointed like 1999, but for now, there’s unbridled optimism and anticipation. Let’s enjoy the ride.
