We’re in the final hours before NaNoWriMo 2013 kicks off, and I may be doing an incredibly stupid thing. I may be just winging it.
I’ve got an opening sentence, practically an opening paragraph in my head. And I kind of like it. I just have no idea where I’m going to go with it. But I want to see where. So, come tomorrow, I’m going to commit those words to screen, and then just keep going. No plot. No plan. Just banging out some 1,600 words a day and hoping I end up at 50,000 with some sort of coherent story told.
I did something similar on one of my earlier attempts, and I ended up with a bizarre story about blacklisted Men in Black agents taking their orders from the frozen head of Walt Disney trying to protect the likes of Bigfoot and the Loch Ness Monster from an evil criminal organization called the Literati composed of members named after famous epic poems. I didn’t finish, but because of falling behind on writing time, not because I didn’t think it had anywhere to go. I’m actually kind of fond of the 10,000 words I managed to get down on it, and it remains on my hard drive as yet another piece of potential I mean to get back to one day.
So hopefully I’ll have the same luck with the creativity and better luck with the perseverance. I do have some possible directions, but I’m totally ready to go with the flow. Then again, things usually flow downhill rather quickly, so maybe I shouldn’t be using that metaphor.
