It works great as a re-imagining of Space Seed but then degenerates into a rehash of the resolution of Wrath of Khan. If they'd used the clever story telling of the first hour and half on the ending it would have been an amazing movie.

You also see it in the (over)reactions to The Big Bang Theory. You've got people screaming, "THEY'RE NOT MAKING FUN OF US IN THE PROPER WAY!" There are plenty of reasons to dislike the show (the ascendance of Sheldon Cooper and the increasing implausibility of anyone continuing to be friends with him chief among them) but arguing that there are better geek jokes to be made implies the audience is operating within the same frame of reference.

Excellent writeup, sir. Couldn't agree more on all counts. The indie band analogy is spot on IMO, and in combination with several geek-icon properties returning and disappointing (The SW prequels and Prometheus in particular) it's created this overcompensation in the opposite direction in geekdom that's testing my patience. Instead of blind enthusiasm we get rampant negativity, and as much as geeks have lauded the mainstream acceptance of their culture in recent years I think there's a growing sense that they kind of liked being on the outer all along, and that's turning into distrust of the people who are bridging the gap - people like Abrams, for example.

For me, it's become just as fanciful as the pre-Phantom Menace euphoria, only in the other direction. Not that Abrams or, say, modern-day Peter Jackson don't have their faults - they do - but the current geek consensus just feels a little TOO keen to dredge up excuses to throw them on the coals. The Trek thing is another good example of this.
